Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video

There’s a wide variety of genres, periods, and ratings on this list, so you should be able to find something that interests you.

Bruce Almighty

Bruce Almighty

The comedy Bruce Almighty is one of Jim Carrey’s most well-known works. During the film, Carrey portrays the downtrodden TV reporter Bruce Nolan, who has had bad luck. After accepting a profane challenge, Carrey was face to face with the Almighty (divine creator, father of Jesus, Morgan Freeman lookalike).

To show Bruce that deciding the fate of the cosmos isn’t easy, God gives him the power to be God essentially. When Bruce tries to exploit his newfound abilities for his benefit, the usual shenanigans and hilarity ensue. Although Bruce Almighty is primarily a humorous film, it does offer some profound reflections about God, miracles, and the beauty of life. This can be considered one of the best Movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Shrek

Shrek

It’s easy to overlook how significant Shrek’s 2001 theatrical release was. To compete with Pixar, DreamWorks Animation released an “edgier,” “slightly more adult-oriented,” and “kid-inappropriate” animated feature. Here the parents laughed at humor that their kids didn’t get.

Shrek succeeds brilliantly as a tale of an outcast seeking acceptance and finding love in the unlikeliest places. As a standalone piece of entertainment, Shrek is both visually stunning and loads of fun, and even though a lot has changed in the last two decades, the film holds up very well. This is indeed one of the best Movies on Amazon Prime Video.

About Time

About Time

In addition to being an excellent romantic comedy, “About Time” stands out as one of the very most extraordinary time travel films ever filmed. A true tearjerker, that’s for sure. The film is written and directed by Richard Curtis and stars Domhnall Gleeson as a young man who finds out from his father at 21 that the men in his family can time travel.

This helps when he flubs his first date with an attractive American girl (Rachel McAdams) and wants a second opportunity to make a good impression. But what begins as a joyful, grounded, and romantic adventure gradually turns heartbreaking, as About Time becomes a father-son drama. This is one of the most awesome Movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Clue

Clue

This movie is with a cast that includes both original characters and those made specifically for the film. Jonathan Lynn’s adaptation of the popular mystery board game is one of the rare examples of a game adaptation that lives up to the enjoyment of the source material. To recap the plot, the movie centers on six random people meeting at a remote New England estate.

The viewers are taken on a roller coaster trip full of blood and mayhem as soon as the lights go out. The film had three possible conclusions when it was first produced, but the Prime Video version is a hybrid of the three. As a result, this is one of the Movies on Amazon Prime Video that stand apart from others.

The Last Crusade

The Last Crusade

Fans of Indiana Jones often speak of The Last Crusade in hushed tones and appropriate, reverent tones. This is the third film in the franchise, and it’s easily the best one thus far. Even though Harrison Ford’s whip-wielding archaeologist initially appeared in the film Raiders of the Lost Ark, the character’s backstory is only revealed in The Last Crusade.

We learn where Indiana Jones got his dread of snakes, his terror of whips, and even his nickname. It also features the first appearance of Henry Jones Sr., Indy’s father, as performed by the late great Sean Connery.  This is one of the best Movies on Prime Video.

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now

The movie Apocalypse Now is flawless. Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, The Outsiders, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), is responsible for this excellent adaptation.

The narration’s size, intimacy, and fantastic score add something special. Character work that would influence future greats like Platoon makes it as dark, colorful, and mysterious as Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. This can be considered one of the best Movies on Prime Video.

It’s a Wonderful Life

It's a Wonderful Life

The film “It’s a Wonderful Life” has stood the test of time and is considered a classic by many to be among the best of all time. George Bailey (James Stewart) is a banker who finds himself in hard times yet spends his entire life helping those around him.

George ends his life on Christmas Eve when he finds himself in utter financial despair. Fortunately, George is spared from this terrible end thanks to the prayers of his family and friends. This is indeed one of the best Movies on Prime Video.

Thelma & Louise

Thelma & Louise

Ridley Scott is a man with varied interests outside of science fiction. Friendship is the central theme of this film about two female outlaws (Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, respectively).

A group of women, all mistreated by the males, decide to go on a road trip together. However, after a drunken man attempts to rape Thelma outside a bar and Louise shoots and kills him, the women decide to flee from the law rather than face justice.

Candyman

Candyman

Continuing a series from the previous installment is challenging in the horror genre. When filmmakers do this, the results are either an excellent addition to the canon that improves the entire or a disgusting cash grab that fans will despise.

Candyman, by Nia DaCosta, is unequivocally the former. The fourth picture, set to be released in 2021, is shaping up to be the greatest of the bunch, surpassing even the 1992 original in scope and ambition.

The Northman

The Northman

The Northman is based on a plot device from Hamlet to The Lion King, used in countless works. Yet, Robert Eggers manages to breathe new life into a classic tale. The Northman is a tale of vengeance as we follow a deposed prince on his quest to rescue his kidnapped mother, avenge his father’s death, and eliminate the usurper who stole his realm.

Moreover, if that’s all you want, you’ll find it. And there is more to the story than that. First, the conflict in The Northman between man as a beast and man as a civilized being can be seen from different perspectives. A second interpretation is that it serves as a sobering reminder that no matter how much we wish otherwise, we cannot change our destinies.

The Lost City

The Lost City

The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, is a funny romantic adventure comedy. Bullock stars as a recluse writer kidnapped by an eccentric millionaire and forced to search for a long-lost treasure in this unexpected summer blockbuster.

Even her cover model, played by Tatum, offers her some unexpected assistance. Bullock and Tatum play off one other brilliantly as the bitter novelist and the giddy hipster, respectively.

House of Gucci

House of Gucci

House of Gucci is different from the film for you if that’s what you’re after a straightforward biopic. True, Ridley Scott’s film chronicles the passionate affair between Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci. However, it also shows how it revolutionized the fashion house that shares its name.

The star-studded cast of House of Gucci, though, is what makes it worth watching. So many fantastic and campy characters inject much life into the film, from Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani to Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci. Despite mixed reviews, the film has found an audience who see it as a masterpiece of misguided camp.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street

You know how many movies there are that explore the downside of success through the eyes of celebrities. Like rock singers, actors, and business owners. Jordan Belfort can be considered an entrepreneur. And on Belfort’s memoir of the same name in 2007, The Wolf of Wall Street is an entertaining and informative biopic.

It’s a wild voyage full of dope, graft, and zany shenanigans. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Belfort, while Jonah Hill plays his partner and right-hand man, Donnie Azoff, in this film by Martin Scorsese.

Belfort’s rise and fall as Wall Street’s most vicious stockbroker are chronic in the film, which depicts Belfort employing every dirty trick in the book and creating some of his own. This can be considered one of the best Movies on Amazon.

No Time to Die

No Time to Die

“No Time to Die,” the last James Bond film to star Daniel Craig, is hardly the best hour. While appreciation is for all the Craig films’ touching stories, “No Time to Die” takes viewers on a genuine emotional rollercoaster before ending on a tragic note.

There’s drama. There’s a great chase scene. Rami Malek’s villain was a letdown. This is one of the most awesome Movies on Amazon.

Emergency

Emergency

An emergency is, at first glance, a classic college comedy about three buddies enjoying one wild night out. But, if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a biting satire on how society evaluates minority youth and the fears that evaluation creates for those targeted.

Regular college students Sean, Kunle, and Carlos want to have fun and attend as many frat parties as possible in one evening. However, when they discover an unconscious white woman who appears underage, their evening quickly turns downhill.

Calling the police is the best option, but being men of color, the three buddies are understandably nervous about how the officers will view them. So an insane journey full of increasingly unpleasant events has begun. It’s a scathing satire with superb acting and a timely plot. This is one of the best Movies on Amazon.
